Observation 01

Following the morning light

The same window gives a room a different shape at every hour. In the morning, a bright rectangle reaches across the floor. By noon the edges soften, and the details that seemed important begin to disappear.

Try choosing one ordinary spot and looking at it at three different times. A doorway, a tree outside, or the corner of a desk will do. Notice the direction of the shadows before looking at the objects themselves.

If you take a photograph, leave a little empty space around the subject. The space often tells you more about the light than the subject does. There is no need to turn every observation into a collection; sometimes noticing is enough.
